A new Netflix adaptation of a Guillermo del Toro short story is set to do some light filming in Alberta soon, so be prepared to spot some areas you may recognize upon its release.
The streaming giant is working with the critically acclaimed Frankenstein and Pan’s Labyrinth director on the adaptation of The Boy in the Iron Box, which del Toro wrote with Chuck Hogan.
The synopsis for the film stated that “Flying dark, a plane carrying a team of mercenaries, crash-lands on a remote snowy summit. When they come across a maze-like stone fortress, it’s no refuge from the wolves and the freezing winds. It’s more like a trap. What they discover can stop the heart — or worse. As terror takes on a new shape, the real battle for survival begins,” according to Netflix.
Principal photography for the film began in Toronto in October of last year and is set to wrap next week, according to What’s on Netflix.
The Alberta unit shoot for the project is currently in pre-production, with filming set to last for just a handful of days, running from Jan. 12 to Jan. 16, according to the Director’s Guild of Canada (DGC) Alberta Production list.
It will be directed by David Prior, best known for his work on the 2020 supernatural thriller film Empty Man, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. The film will star Rupert Friend, Kevin Durand, and Jaeden Martell.
No release date for the film has been announced.
Daily Hive has reached out to Netflix regarding this project but has yet to hear back.
While we are on the topic of TV shows and movies currently shooting or are on tap to be in the future, some pretty big projects are in the works.
Just last month, a Gossip Girl star was spotted in Calgary while filming a new Netflix movie, which is currently on hiatus until next week, according to the DGC. Keep your eyes peeled for more potential star sightings, folks.
A new TV series, rumoured to be filming in Alberta later this year, may also have a connection to the hit HBO anthology series True Detective.
