It’s not entirely uncommon for Vancouver to be mentioned on American television, as was the case on a recent episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, in a joke regarding the city’s film scene.
The joke about the thriving Vancouver film scene was in response to a story about tensions between Canada and the United States.
Of course it was.

In a segment about Canada, Meyers showed a clip from Fox News featuring Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. He suggested Canada was “feeding off” of America.
He then asked, “Why do we do our films in Canada?”
The late show host had several reasons why American films are made in Canada. One of his answers leads us to wonder how the Eye of Sauron would look atop the Vancouver skyline.
(Probably better than some of the buildings in downtown?)
Vancouver is rarely actually Vancouver in films; the West Coast city is usually disguised as another place. An example of this is the HBO hit show The Last of Us. Most of the show’s second season was filmed in Vancouver and parts of British Columbia, with the city being dressed up as Seattle. This is one of a plethora of examples.
Meyers played that up.
“First of all, I’ll tell you why we make films in Canada,” he said.
“Because Vancouver looks like every city on earth.”
He added that you can film a movie in Vancouver and say it takes place anywhere. He had a cheeky, albeit untrue, example of that reality.
“In fact, this is a true story, The Lord of the Rings movie? Filmed entirely in Vancouver,” Meyers joked.
“The Eye of Sauron was already there. They just wrote it into the movie.”
In case you didn’t already know, the truth about The Lord of the Rings is that it was famously filmed in New Zealand, but you could probably make Vancouver look like New Zealand pretty easily.
Peter Jackson, you listening? The Lord of the Rings 4: Sauron Strikes Back, filmed entirely in Vancouver, when?
