Netflix just dropped new filming locations for its Alberta-shot series, including two from the new show, The Abandons, giving fans a first look at where the western drama came to life across the province.
First announced back in November 2021, the series synopsis on Netflix mentions that it is set in Washington Territory in 1854, with the series following the matriarchs of two very different families: one of wealth and privilege, bound by blood, and the other a found family of orphans and outcasts, bound by love and necessity.
“The families find their fates linked by two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love, and a piece of land with silver underneath. The collision echoes the American struggle of the haves and have-nots, in a place just beyond the reach of justice,” the synopsis added.
The Netflix website, Netflix in Your Neighbourhood, just added two new locations where the show was filmed.
The first location is the Nakoda Lakeside Lodge near Seebe, just west of Calgary. The Netflix website states, “Nakoda Lakeside Lodge, closed for more than a decade, is now being revitalized as a vibrant community hub. It also served as a key location in episode one of Netflix’s series The Abandons. This episode sets the stage for the ongoing rivalry between the wealthy Van Ness family and the Abandons.”
The second location is the Stoney Park Campground in Mînî Thnî, and it plays quite an essential role in the show. “Stoney Park Campground serves as the main location of the Van Ness homestead throughout the series.”
Filming began in May 2024 in Calgary and surrounding areas, featuring a star-studded cast, and wrapped up in October 2024. The show officially released on Dec. 4, 2025, with a total of seven episodes, so grab your popcorn and get to watching!
