Alberta’s film industry is thriving, with tons of films being shot here, including Anna Pidgeon, My Life with the Walter Boys, and The Last of Us, showcasing the province on screen.
Joining the list is The Abandons, a brand-new Netflix series that is set to premiere on Dec. 4, 2025.
Netflix has also given fans a first look at the series, offering a glimpse of the elaborate sets and dramatic scenes that will unfold throughout the show.
The Western action drama The Abandons was first announced back in November 2021, with Netflix giving the show a 10-episode order, per Variety.
The series synopsis on Netflix reads: “Set in Washington Territory in 1854, the series follows the matriarchs of two very different families: one of wealth and privilege, bound by blood; and the other a found family of orphans and outcasts, bound by love and necessity. The families find their fates linked by two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love, and a piece of land with silver underneath. The collision echoes the American struggle of the haves and have-nots, in a place just beyond the reach of justice.
Filming began in May 2024 in Calgary and surrounding areas, featuring a star-studded cast, and wrapped up in October 2024. Viewers can now look forward to seeing Alberta on the big screen when the series drops later this year.
Alberta’s movie and TV scene is evolving, with new series being filmed throughout the province and local Albertans working behind the scenes. These projects are showing the world just how versatile and gorgeous the province can be.
