A new movie being released by powerhouse studio A24 is filming in Alberta soon, and it’s the next feature from a rising local director in the horror scene.
The film, titled The Land of Nod, is the next film from Edmonton-born writer/director Kyle Edward Ball, who rose to prominence with the release of Skinamarink in 2023.
Skinamarink, which was filmed in Edmonton on a budget of around $15,000, made serious waves in the film industry, with massive publications like Rolling Stone even naming it the best horror film of 2023. The film went on to gross $2.1 million.
Ball’s follow-up film is set to be released globally by A24, according to Variety. The studio has been on a roll lately, being involved with films like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Pearl, The Whale, Talk To Me, Heretic, The Brutalist, and Babygirl just in this decade alone.
With a string of hits like that, we are so excited to see what Ball gets to work with, and we are willing to bet the budget on his next film will be WAY higher than Skinamarink.
Daily Hive has learned from people involved with the film that shooting is set to occur in and around the Edmonton area in March/April, and production is on the hunt for “a number of different houses built around the 1960s or earlier.”
According to ACTRA’s list of productions, filming will also take place in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with filming kicking off at the end of March and running into early May.
Very little is known about what the new movie from Ball will be about and where, specifically in Alberta, filming will happen, but be sure to check in with Daily Hive as more details are revealed!
